Football Recruiting Readiness: The 5 Areas Coaches Evaluate Before Making an Offer

Table of Contents

TLDR

College coaches evaluate recruits across five dimensions before they commit scholarship resources: academic eligibility, film quality, verified athletic performance, communication professionalism, and exposure organization. Most Michigan athletes focus on one or two of these and leave significant opportunities on the table. This guide scores your readiness across all five and shows you what to fix first.

What Recruiting Readiness Actually Means

Talent is necessary. Talent alone is not sufficient.

A college coach evaluating a Michigan high school football player is making a staffing decision with financial stakes attached. They need confidence that the player they offer:

  • Can gain admission and stay eligible academically
  • Performs at the level their film and numbers suggest
  • Has the communication maturity to manage the recruiting process
  • Has been exposed to enough real competition to evaluate their talent honestly

When any of these areas is underdeveloped, a coach who would otherwise make an offer hesitates or moves to a recruit whose profile is cleaner and more complete.

Recruiting readiness is the degree to which your profile answers a coach's evaluation questions before they have to ask them. Recruits who answer those questions proactively, with organized and verified information, generate more offers faster.

Area 1: Academics and Eligibility

Academic eligibility is the non-negotiable floor. No other recruiting strength compensates for a player who cannot enroll, maintain eligibility, or meet NCAA academic standards.

What coaches evaluate:

  • Core-course GPA (the NCAA cares about this number, not your overall GPA)
  • Progress toward completing 16 NCAA-approved core courses
  • Standardized test scores (SAT or ACT)
  • Graduation status and expected date

Per NCSA Sports, Division I requires a minimum 2.3 core-course GPA and completion of 16 NCAA-approved core courses including specific distribution across English, math, science, and social sciences.

How to measure your readiness in this area:

  • Map your current transcript against the 16 core-course requirement. How many have you completed? How many remain?
  • Calculate your current core-course GPA separately from your overall GPA.
  • Register with the NCAA Eligibility Center at eligibilitycenter.org by junior year.
  • Identify your ACT or SAT target score based on your current core-course GPA and the NCAA sliding scale.

Red flags that hurt you:

  • Non-core courses padding a GPA that looks strong but does not satisfy the NCAA requirement
  • Junior year transcripts that show a gap of five or more courses remaining
  • No standardized test score on record by the start of junior year

Area 2: Film Readiness

Film is a coach's primary evaluation tool between personal interactions. If your film does not clearly show what you can do in a real game at full speed, coaches cannot evaluate you. If they cannot evaluate you, they cannot offer you.

What coaches evaluate:

  • Quality of the filming angle and resolution
  • Whether the recruit is clearly identifiable on film
  • Breadth and quality of clips in the highlight reel
  • Availability of full game film to back up the highlights
  • Consistency of performance across full game footage

How to measure your readiness in this area:

  • Watch your own highlight reel from start to finish. Would you know who to watch without the caption? Do the first 30 seconds represent your best work?
  • Check whether your Hudl profile is set to allow coach access and search visibility.
  • Confirm that full game film is available for your most recent season.
  • Ask an objective observer -- a coach outside your program, an evaluator -- whether the film represents your ability fairly.

Red flags that hurt you:

  • No publicly available film at all
  • Highlight reels that open with mediocre or unclear plays
  • Film from two seasons ago with nothing current
  • Film where the player cannot be identified without prior knowledge

Area 3: Verified Performance

Self-reported measurables carry limited credibility with college coaches. Verified performance data from a neutral third party converts your claims into evidence.

What coaches evaluate:

  • Height and weight (verified, not self-reported)
  • 40-yard dash (laser timed)
  • Position-relevant agility and power drills: vertical jump, broad jump, 5-10-5 shuttle
  • Position-specific combine drill results where available

As NCSA Sports confirms, coaches specifically seek third-party verified measurements because impartial verification signals professionalism and honesty.

How to measure your readiness in this area:

  • Are your measurables on your recruiting profile the result of a third-party verified event?
  • Do you have documentation of your combine or testing event results to share with coaches?
  • Are your numbers current within the last season?

Red flags that hurt you:

  • Profile lists measurables with no indication of how or when they were verified
  • Numbers that differ significantly from what coaches observe on film (a common trust breaker)
  • No combine or evaluation event attendance on record

Area 4: Recruiting Communication

Coaches form impressions through the quality of every interaction. A recruit whose emails are specific, professional, and timely communicates maturity. A recruit who sends vague mass emails, fails to follow up, or responds slowly communicates disorganization.

What coaches evaluate:

  • Professionalism and specificity of initial outreach emails
  • Response speed and quality when coaches do engage
  • Evidence that the recruit researched the specific program
  • Follow-up consistency without crossing into desperation

According to SportsRecruits, effective coach communication is one of the most impactful actions a student-athlete can take in their recruiting process.

How to measure your readiness in this area:

  • Have you contacted coaches on your target list by email with a specific, professional message?
  • Do your emails include your verified measurables, film links, and a clear next step?
  • Do you have a follow-up system that sends a new piece of information to unresponsive coaches every three to four weeks?
  • Are you managing your communication across all target programs in an organized way?

Red flags that hurt you:

  • Generic "I've always loved your program" emails that coaches recognize as mass outreach
  • Failure to follow up after a positive initial interaction
  • Social media accounts that contradict the professional impression you create in emails

Area 5: Purposeful Exposure

Random exposure -- posting a highlight online and hoping the right coach finds it -- rarely converts into real recruiting outcomes. Purposeful exposure means actively placing yourself in front of the specific coaches and programs that fit your realistic recruiting profile.

What coaches evaluate:

  • Have you attended camps at programs on your target list?
  • Have you competed at events where their scouts or evaluators were present?
  • Is your profile discoverable in the databases and platforms coaches use to search for recruits?
  • Has your high school coach communicated your name and profile to college contacts?

How to measure your readiness in this area:

  • Map your attended camps and combines against your target school list. Are you overlapping or missing the right programs?
  • Is your Hudl profile set to public and searchable?
  • Are your verified measurables included in relevant scouting databases?
  • Have you briefed your high school coach on your target school list and asked them to make calls on your behalf?

Red flags that hurt you:

  • Attending high-profile camps at Power Four programs exclusively when your realistic targets are MAC or Division II schools
  • No camp attendance at all by junior year
  • A recruiting profile that is private or incomplete

How to Assess Your Own Recruiting Readiness

Score yourself on each of the five areas on a simple scale:

Strong -- This area is organized, current, and would not raise questions from a college coach. Developing -- This area has some elements in place but has identifiable gaps. Gap -- This area needs significant work before your recruiting profile is competitive.

Most Michigan recruits find one or two areas in the "strong" category, two or three in "developing," and one clear gap that is dragging down their entire profile. The gap area is where to direct the most immediate effort.

The Gap Most Michigan Athletes Never Address

Based on the structure of most self-directed recruiting attempts, the most common gap is recruiting communication combined with organized exposure. Athletes spend time developing athletically and even film their games, but they never systematically contact coaches, never follow up consistently, and never create an organized plan to be evaluated by the right programs.

The athlete who contacts 40 programs with specific, professional emails, follows up consistently, attends camps at realistic target schools, and has verified measurables ready to share converts more talent into offers than the better raw athlete who never organized their outreach.

Recruiting is a process. It rewards organization as much as it rewards talent.

BLWE's Recruiting Readiness Snapshot

Be Like Wat3r Exposure built its free Recruiting Readiness Snapshot around exactly these five areas: academics and eligibility, film readiness, verified performance, recruiting communication, and purposeful exposure.

The snapshot:

  • Scores your current readiness across all five dimensions
  • Identifies your single biggest organizational gap
  • Delivers three clear next actions you can take immediately

It does not grade your athletic talent, project scholarship outcomes, or make promises about recruiting results. It identifies where your plan is incomplete and gives you a concrete starting point.

For Michigan high school football players who want to know exactly where to focus first, the snapshot takes less than 10 minutes and costs nothing.

Know exactly where your recruiting profile stands.
