Review Eligibility Steps

Find Your Starting Path

Educational guidance only—not a certification decision.

Suggested next step for this pathway

Review the Profile Page account and confirm with the school compliance office. Then use the official NCAA account guide and contact the institution’s compliance office for your specific situation.

Account Types

Choose by division, student status and recruiting activity—not age alone. Certification-account fees are nonrefundable after 30 days under current NCAA guidance; fee waivers may be available.

Academic and Athletics Certification Account

Generally Division I or II prospects, including recruited athletes, official-visit prospects and walk-ons.

Used for: Academic and athletics certification.

Current fee guidance: A registration fee applies unless an eligible fee waiver is requested. Confirm the current fee on the official NCAA registration page.

Athletics Certification Account

Generally international Division III prospects and certain transfers when an institution confirms athletics-only certification is appropriate.

Used for: Athletics certification only.

Current fee guidance: A registration fee applies unless an eligible fee waiver is requested. Confirm the current fee on the official NCAA registration page.

Profile Page Account

Generally younger or undecided students and domestic Division III prospects who are not ready for certification.

Used for: Creates an NCAA ID and can later transition to certification.

Current fee guidance: The Profile Page is free. If certification is later needed, the appropriate certification account requires payment or an eligible fee waiver.

NIL Deal Safety — Green / Yellow / Red

GREEN

  • • The deal clearly identifies the real business or sponsor.
  • • Compensation is tied to defined NIL deliverables such as posts, appearances, licensing or services.
  • • Payment is commercially reasonable and documented.
  • • The athlete and parent/guardian keep a signed copy and proof of completed deliverables.
  • • The deal does not depend on choosing, attending, remaining at or competing for a specific school.

YELLOW

  • • The sponsor, payment source or deliverables are unclear.
  • • The agreement uses school marks, facilities, uniforms or identifiers without clear permission.
  • • A third party says the deal is 'guaranteed' but will not explain who is paying or why.
  • • The family is being rushed to sign before reviewing the contract.
  • • An agent, adviser, booster, collective or school-connected person is involved and the athlete's obligations are unclear.

RED

  • • Payment is offered simply for committing to or attending a particular school.
  • • Compensation is tied to athletic performance, statistics, playing time, roster status or winning.
  • • The deal requires false advertising, fake engagement or undisclosed payments.
  • • The activity conflicts with MHSAA restricted categories or school policy.
  • • The family is told to hide the agreement or not disclose it to a school/compliance office when disclosure is required.

3.Any reclassification, gap year or delayed-enrollment plan has been screened for the current age-based eligibility rules.

4.Any current or proposed NIL deal has been screened for real deliverables, compensation source and disclosure obligations.

5.No payment or benefit is conditioned on commitment, enrollment, athletic performance, roster status or playing time.

Documents, Student Pathways and Special Cases

Core Courses

Only courses on a high school’s official NCAA-approved list can count. Titles alone are not enough. Confirm approval before enrolling, especially for repeats, summer, credit-recovery, dual-enrollment, online or independent-study courses.

Check My High School’s NCAA-Approved Core Courses

Transcripts and Graduation

List every high school or academic program attended. Official records should be submitted by the school or approved provider. Final certification may require a final official transcript and acceptable proof of graduation. Monitor account tasks and allow processing time.

Athletics and Amateurism

Answer sports-participation questions completely and accurately, including teams, leagues, events, expenses, payments, prizes, awards, agents, advisers, contracts, professional participation, marketing, NIL activity and delayed enrollment. BLWE cannot make an amateurism decision.

International Students

Education systems and records differ by country. Division I or II prospects generally need academic and athletics certification; international Division III prospects generally need athletics certification. Use the NCAA country-specific guidance and contact the destination school’s compliance office.

Official International Guidance

Homeschool Students

Learning at home is not always homeschooling. NCAA classification depends on who creates curriculum, teaches, assesses and awards credit. Homeschool review may require an administrator statement, transcripts, course worksheets and proof of graduation.

Official Homeschool Guidance

Online and Nontraditional Courses

Online, virtual, independent-study and credit-recovery courses require careful review. Confirm the course on the responsible high school’s official NCAA-approved list before enrolling; provider advertising is not proof of approval.

Education-Impacting Disabilities

Students with a documented condition may qualify for an additional case-by-case review. Work privately with the counselor, NCAA Eligibility Center and institution compliance office. Do not submit medical, IEP, 504 or disability documents to BLWE.

Official Disability Resources

Division I & II Age-Based Eligibility

Current Division I and II rules use a five-year eligibility period tied to age and initial full-time college enrollment. The period begins at the earlier of initial full-time enrollment at any college or the applicable age-based trigger after the student turns 19. Transition treatment applies to certain 2026-27 enrollees; prospects first enrolling full time in fall 2027 or later use the age-based model. Because exceptions and individual histories matter, confirm the athlete’s case with the destination school’s compliance office before delaying enrollment, reclassifying or taking a gap year.

Official Age-Based Eligibility Guide

Transfers and Special Cases

Two-year, four-year, 4-2-4, international, walk-on, delayed-enrollment and professional-sports histories can follow different rules. The current or destination school’s athletics compliance office must evaluate the individual case.

Official Transfer Guidance

Counselor and School Resources

Counselors can maintain the school core-course list, upload official transcripts and proof of graduation, confirm fee-waiver requests and help students monitor academic progress. BLWE never requests school portal credentials.

Help the athlete choose the correct account, plan approved courses, organize documents, report sports history honestly and ask counselors and college compliance staff clear questions. Recruitment and eligibility certification are separate processes.
