Why Verified Combine Testing Is Non-Negotiable in Football Recruiting

Primary keyword: verified testing football recruiting

Table of Contents

#TLDR

Verified testing means your athletic measurables were recorded at a recognized event with independent officials, not self-timed in a gym or logged by a parent with a phone. College coaches at every level treat unverified numbers with skepticism. Verified numbers close the gap between interest and evaluation.

What Verified Testing Actually Means

Verified athletic testing happens at sanctioned events, combines, evaluation camps, or scouting events, where timing and measurement are conducted by independent officials rather than the athlete, a parent, or a high school coach. The results carry a source: they come from an event with a name, a date, and documented methodology.

Platforms like UCReport have built entire systems around verified athlete data. UCVerified, launched in early 2026, tracks combine results with documented progression over time. Source: 3STEP Sports The National Scouting Combine maintains a database of athlete results organized by verified testing events. The standard is clear: if a number cannot be traced to an event with independent oversight, coaches treat it as unverifiable.

Why Self-Reported Numbers Do Not Work

College coaches have seen every version of an inflated forty time. A prospect who lists a 4.4 on a recruiting profile but cannot point to the combine where it was recorded has immediately created a credibility problem, and once a coach doubts one number, he doubts the entire profile.

The problem runs deeper than individual numbers. When a coach takes the time to evaluate a recruit based on claimed measurables and then the athlete's actual performance at a camp does not match the profile, the relationship is effectively over. Coaches have limited roster spots and limited time. Athletes who waste that time by overstating measurables do not get second chances.

Scorability's guide on recruiting tools notes that athletic testing alone does not fully capture in-game performance, combine data and film must work together. Source: Scorability That is exactly the point: verified testing data confirms the physical baseline, and film confirms what the athlete does with it in competition.

What Coaches Can Confirm from Verified Data

Verified testing answers specific questions for different positions:

Speed: A verified forty time tells a coach whether a skill player or defensive back can create or close separation at the college level. It also establishes baseline expectations for every other position. A verified max speed metric, miles per hour tracked during actual movement, is increasingly common at evaluation camps and adds another dimension to the speed picture.

Explosiveness: Vertical jump and broad jump measure lower-body power. For linemen, this shows whether an athlete can generate force off the snap. For skill positions, it correlates to jump-ball ability and acceleration.

Change of direction: The pro agility shuttle (5-10-5) and L-drill measure lateral quickness and the ability to redirect at speed. These are particularly important for defensive backs, linebackers, and offensive linemen.

Strength indicators: Position-specific strength benchmarks give coaches context for how an athlete will develop at the college level. A lighter lineman with elite movement numbers is a different prospect than a heavier athlete with below-average agility scores.

None of these numbers matter unless they came from a source a coach can verify.

The Standard Tests in Football Recruiting

The combine tests coaches look for most often:

  • 40-yard dash, the most referenced speed metric in football recruiting
  • Vertical jump, lower-body explosiveness
  • Broad jump, horizontal explosiveness and power
  • Pro agility shuttle (5-10-5), lateral quickness and change of direction
  • L-drill (3-cone), body control, balance, and multi-directional speed

NCSA Sports notes that the forty yard dash uses two timed segments, and that verified combines use electronic timing or certified hand timing with multiple officials, not a single person with a stopwatch. Source: NCSA Sports

At some advanced evaluation events, max speed in miles per hour tracked during live movement has become an additional metric coaches request, particularly for skill positions and defensive backs.

Where Michigan Athletes Get Verified Testing

Michigan athletes have several options for accessing legitimate verified testing:

MHSAA/MHSFCA Spring Evaluation Camps: The Michigan High School Athletic Association and Michigan High School Football Coaches Association have partnered to run spring evaluation camps designed to put Michigan players in front of college scouts and coaches. These events provide documented results from an MHSAA-affiliated setting. Source: MHSAA

Recognized national combine events: Organizations like the National Scouting Combine hold events that produce documented results entered into a searchable database college coaches can access.

University-hosted summer camps: Many college programs in Michigan and across the Midwest host summer camps where athletes compete in front of position coaches and participate in testing. Results from these events, particularly at programs the athlete is targeting, carry significant weight.

BLWE Evaluation Events: Be Like Wat3r Exposure builds verified testing into its development and exposure system. Athletes who participate in BLWE camps and evaluations leave with documented results they can present directly to college coaches as part of a complete recruiting profile.

Verified Testing as Part of a Complete Recruiting Plan

Verified testing is one component, not the whole plan. A 4.4 forty without game film that confirms athletic traits in competition answers half the question. Film without verified testing leaves a coach guessing whether the athlete's physical traits translate to the next level. Academic eligibility without either is a moot point.

The athletes who get recruited at Michigan programs, from EMU and CMU to schools across the country, are the ones who have all three working together: documented numbers, organized film, and a clean academic record. BLWE's recruiting system is built around exactly that combination.
